Boxcutter – Arecibo Message out NOW !

Arecibo Message is a move away from the heavily sequenced previous work of Boxcutter, with a move into the more organic [if you can call it that] realm of analogue synths, guitar pedals and analogue delays.

The first track on Arecibo Message is straight into Burial territory, with its heavily reverbed aural spaces and vocal sample manipulation. Unfortunately, Boxcutter doesn’t do either as expertly, but the effect is quite the same. The drum patterns on this track are well produced, as with the whole album, but they never venture far from standard dubstep fare.
Track Two – Mya Rave steps up the pace a little and includes a humorous yet emotional rave synth sequence that harks back to early Prodigy output. The beat is 2-Step and Drum and Bass influenced, and the track features some all out vocal manipulation. Mya Rave will undoubtedly be used in the clubs, and probably to devastating effect, what with the nice warm breakdown and the classic rave synth programming.

Tracks three and four on Arecibo Message bring the album to a whole new level, and we start to see why Boxcutter is starting to gain national and international plaudits. The title track Arecibo Message has a darker mood than either of the first two songs, and is very much welcome. The song has a real dance floor feel to it and seems to make use of sounds that manage to be dark and moody, yet uplifting at the same time.

Track four SpaceBass is a gem of a track. Right from the off we hear a Roland TR 808 doing its thing along with the previously mentioned delay pedals, and the track continues on its sonic journey in becoming a real electro disco gem, with strong shades of Legowelt and Alexander Robotnik. On listening I immediately thought that SpaceBass was like the Beverly Hills Cop theme tune being strapped up and buckled down for its journey into the 21st century. Nice!

The rest of Arecibo Message never gets back to the strength of tracks three and four, yet the album has good production values and great bass lines throughout. There is a lot of influence from Garage and 2-Step, as the drum programming will testify, but Boxcutter never forgets his Dub and Dubstep roots. Boxcutter finds the time to venture into Electro Funk and instrumental Hip Hop as tracks eleven and thirteen will testify.

All in all this album is pretty good. If you are already a Boxcutter fan, you will love it, and be eagerly awaiting the next time you see him live. For a Boxcutter novice, Arecibo Message will start to introduce you to the many influences that Dubstep has at its roots, while also keeping the party flowing along nicely.

Boxcutter Live Set @ Mary Anne Hobbs BBC1 Show

meshine-2large-cmjn Boxcutter was invited on BBC1 by UK Bass Music most beloved promoter Mary Anne Hobbs and just dropped an wild mix to introduce his amazing upcoming 3rd album to be released on planet mu on april’s 20th. ARX001 – LED PIPERZ / BOXCUTTER – 12″ & Digital

img_0178Our first release is a standard-bearer for the twinned dub and dance aspects of this philosophy, keeping a clear distance from the raging wars of ultra-wobbled-mega-synths, with melody and narrative given prominence to generate equal pleasure either in the mix or on the stereo.

Veteran French electronic & dub producer Led Piperz offers gritty and forward-looking bass for the floor with ‘Aerial’, built around a thudding but complex perpetual motion break that doesn’t follow the rules, so be warned, it’s not one for the warm-up session. With echoes of the syncopated spaces of drum & bass, this rich rythmic and melodic cut is sure to be a fixture in the clubs for months to come. Conversely, as it’s title suggests, ‘Otherside Dub’ places dub dynamics at the fore, with hymnal rastaman vocal loops, intricate bass layerings, raw snares and uncompromised musical variations, all driven by an awesome low-end engine.

‘Otherside Remix (Earth Is My Spaceship)’ is Boxcutter’s stone in the massive wall of sound Airflex Labs aims to construct block by block. His spacey, lush and dynamic remix of ‘Otherside Dub’ is rootical proof that the best of today’s sound is made by those wise enough to keep the past in mind. Although the track will also appear on his new Planet Mu CD, this 12” is the only place where it will be located on vinyl.

ARX 001 featured in Bun Zero’s Fob Show !

Bun-Zer0 has been DJing both in his native Belgium for over 15 years, and most recently internationally including recent performances at the legendary night FWD>> in London, as well as a three hour set in the USA.
His interest in dubstep began after hearing early music from Horsepower Productions.
In 2006, to spread his enthusiasm for this emerging sound, Bun began promoting nights at the Beursschouwburg, with a wide array of UK pioneers, including Skream, Youngsta, Loefah and Mark One.
He also promoted some other nights with N-Type, Walsh and Dj Pinch as guests.
As a DJ, Bun-Zer0 has supported many of the scene’s top artists, and is one of the best known dubstep DJs outside of the UK.
He hosts an award winning weekly show on the first dubstep radio station, Sub.fm, with an audience of hundreds.
It’s no surprise Bun’s show has a huge following, as he expertly blends fresh tunes from both the scene’s big hitters, as well as unknown up and comers. Also, the accompaniment of harmonica player Mr Jo gives Bun’s show a unique touch.
Bun has also been writing for the music magazine Rif Raf for over 10 years, as well as compiling the CD ‘SubStance’ from Aecletrik Records, which showcased the now diverse & international sound of dubstep.
With further international bookings as well as exciting lineups at his own nights, 2008 is set to see Bun-Zer0 cement his reputation as one of the scene’s best-loved and most well-respected DJs.
In January 09 Bun released Psychedelic Flu and Loneliness, two broken Dubstep bits, on BASS TOURIST.
